The Hockenheimring first staged the German Grand Prix in 1970 – but two years earlier it had entered motor racing history for an altogether unhappier reason. It was at the German circuit, not far from historic Heidelberg, that the great Jim Clark perished in a 1968 F2 race when his Lotus left the track and flew into the unforgiving Hockenheim trees.
