On a windswept former RAF airfield near the village of Silverstone in Northamptonshire, in the presence of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Formula One World Championship was born on May 13, 1950 when Dr Giuseppe Farina won the 70-lap race in an Alfa Romeo. He would go on to become the first World Champion in September of that year.
