The Sepang circuit, approximately 45 minutes to the north of Kuala Lumpur was first used in 1999. The first and second races were staged at season's end before a permanent switch to its early-season slot in 2001. Designed by Hermann Tilke, it features considerable elevation changes as well as an unusually wide track, allowing for different lines and points of attack for drivers intent on overtaking.
