Anna Meares OAM was born in Blackwater Queensland and started cycling aged 11. Meares is a three time Olympian, with five Olympic medals won from six Olympic starts, including two gold, one silver and two bronze. Her silver from Beijing was won just seven months after a horrific crash that saw her break her neck. Meares is a ten time world champion and four times Commonwealth Games champion.
Meares was awarded the Order of Australia medal at the age of 20 for the services to her sport after becoming the first female for Australia to win gold on the velodrome. Her spirit of sportsmanship, her never say quit attitude, her passion, focus on the goal and her dedication and hard work – are the hallmarks that define her as a champion and a person. Expect big things as she takes to the track of a different kind in 2013.
