The son of the popular double world rally champion of the same name, young Carlos may have been chagrined to end his rookie season in F1 last year behind his teenaged Toro Rosso team-mate. If he was, he handled it with dignity.

That quality enabled him also to endure a mixed debut season of bright moments and luckless retirements as his cross-garage rival Max Verstappen harvested the headlines for his stunning feats at a tender age.

The luck was not with Carlos and he may need it to return this year if he is to keep his seat beyond this season, such is Toro Rosso’s habit for change. Few last longer than two years with the outfit and needs to improve on his best finish of seventh, in Russia, last season.

His immaculate schooling and preparation delivered some mature performances, but it will need to pay off now with some improved races and results. A few local triumphs against his team-mate would do him good as he bids to ward off the rivals looming in his mirrors.
