The son of the popular double world rally champion of the same name, young Carlos may have been disappointed when he was passed over for promotion to the Red Bull senior team after four races last season (2016). Instead, it was his team-mate Dutch teenager Max Verstappen who received the call.
But whatever rancour he felt, Carlos controlled it and bounced back with a solid demonstration of his talents in the rest of the year as he combined speed and confidence to reel off 10 points-scoring finishes.
He was sixth in Spain, the United States and Brazil with strong drives that earned him well-deserved praise and another year with the Toro Rosso team.
His immaculate schooling and preparation delivered some mature performances, but it will need to pay off now with some improved races and results. A few local triumphs against his team-mate would do him good as he continues to ward off the rivals looming in his mirrors.
