After two unspectacular seasons with Sauber, the second leading to his departure without scoring a point in 2014, Esteban spent last year as Ferra ri reserve driver. Now, thanks to his Mexican supporters, he is back in F1 with a point to prove as the American Haas team adds him alongside Grosjean in their line-up
His presence will be popular in both Americas, but he has yet to convince the critics that he can deliver the progress needed for Haas to make an impact this year.
His early career showed high promise. In 2008, he won the Formula BMW Europe championship, a feat that made him the youngest Mexican to win an international series, aged just 17. In 2010, he won the inaugural GP3 series and two years later was the first GP3 graduate to finish in the top three of the GP2 parent series.
Since then, however, his progress has been stunted and, after shadowing compatriot Sergio Perez at Sauber in 2012, when he was test and reserve driver, he has been unable to deliver the results once expected of him. Haas have given him another chance.
