Biography

One of the highly-regarded talents to emerge through the Mercedes junior driver system, Pascal impressed last year in his debut season with the Mercedes-powered Manor team. He scored their only point of the season in Austria.

Much is expected of him and many observers thought he would move to a front-running team when Manor faced more financial problems at the end of last year. But as the seats were filled, he chose to switch to Sauber who are under new ownership.

Born to a German father and Mauritian mother, Wehrlein worked his way through karts and juniors to reach the prestigious German DTM touring car series in which he became the youngest race winner in 2014. That success enabled him to be named as the Mercedes F1® team’s reserve driver and in 2015 the youngest champion.

These impressive efforts carried him to Manor in 2016 when he produced a series of notable performances in a less-than-competitive car.
