Rated by many as a potential future world champion, Valtteri will have the equipment to build a title challenge this season when he lines up as successor to Nico Rosberg and team-mate to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

The easy-natured Finn is a fast driver and a tough competitor, but brings with him none of the baggage that characterised the intra-team rivalry of Hamilton and Rosberg who had been highly-competitive team-mates and friends since they were teenagers.

His first season is likely to be a ‘learning zone’ as he settles into the champion outfit and builds up relationships around the garage, but he should be expected to fight for podiums and his maiden Formula One victory.

Fast, bold and forceful, he has all the hallmarks of a winner, even if his maiden triumph remains elusive. He scored two podiums for Williams in 2015, in Canada and Mexico, but was often frustrated and experienced much the same last year with another podium in Canada, the team’s only one.

Bottas began his karting career as a six-year-old child, revelled in the speed and competition and began his quest to emulate the feats of his hero two-time champion Mika Hakkinen.

“Quite simply, he is one of the most talented young drivers I have come across,” said Sir Frank Williams. “We expect great things from him.”

The future starts here for Bottas as he bids to put himself firmly on the map as a winner.
