Polesitter Nick McBride held out teammate Andre Heimgartner in the opening Porsche Carrera Cup victory at the 2017 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.
McBride won the 10-lapper by 0.8541 seconds after Heimgartner's last lap challenge evaporated when he got a bit 'taily' exiting a corner around the back of the circuit.
Still, Heimgartner was still able to keep third-placed Cameron McConville behind him, with the trip separated by just over one second at the chequered flag. McConville set the fastest lap of the race on lap three.
Meanwhile, Heimgartner took over the lead in the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup after David Wall – who he shared the points lead with after the first round in Adelaide – finished sixth in race one, behind Dylan O'Keefe and Alex Davison in fourth and fifth.
The first amateur driver home was Stephen Grove in 11th, with Marc Cini well positioned to claim that honour until he spun on the final lap.
Fifteen of the 16 drivers completed the distance, with Cini the only DNF.
Race two is at 2:55pm tomorrow.
