Baird saunters to Carrera Cup success

Craig Baird’s irresistible Carrera Cup form at the 2012 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix continued in today’s third and final race as he again showed the field a clean pair of heels.

Baird was untroubled in his 1.05-second victory over Jonny Reid, with Alex Davison third – completing the same trifecta in all three Carrera Cup races.

Although he was bested by Baird, Reid was delighted with his performance.

“It’s fair to say Craig was in a league of his own this weekend,” said Reid. “But personally, to take pole position with a new team and get three second places is something I am really proud of.

“The Porsche just comes alive on this circuit, as the speed and flow suit it down to the ground – a bit like Phillip Island. I’d love to come back again, as this has been an unbelievable weekend.”

With the top three drivers immovable, the battle for the lower places in race three carried the most interest, and this time former Bathurst 1000 winner Steve Richards nailed fourth spot, ahead of James Davison and Andrew Heimgartner.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for three-time F1 winner Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who lost a chunk of spots early on after finding some trouble, and then tapped Daniel Gaunt on the final lap, pushing the New Zealander off track. Despite the misdemeanours, Frentzen still finished eighth, one spot behind young Queenslander Nick Foster.
