Doohan spoils DC’s perfect score

Mick Doohan finally put Australia in top spot when the last Ultimate Speed Comparison one-lap handicap race was held at the 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Doohan (Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG ) snapped Scot David Coulthard’s three-race winning streak in the RB7 F1 car with a beautifully controlled drive, while Casey Stoner (Commodore V8 Supercar) was only metres behind in third.

All bets were laid off in the finale, with the three drivers setting their fastest laps of the weekend.

“Hopefully it’s not the last time we’ll see an Aussie winning today,” joked Doohan.

“This event is so fun and highlights the differences between the three vehicles, and it’s amazing how fast Casey and David were flashing up behind me.”

Doohan’s victory left Stoner as the only driver not to taste success on the weekend, but he was philosophical.

“We have been slowly getting faster round here, and I was really happy with that lap apart from missing a few chicanes,” said Stoner. “The way that David’s car made up ground on me over the last few turns was phenomenal.”
