Hamilton on song in practice

31 MAR - 03 APR 2016

Lewis Hamilton reminded the Formula One world of his chance of stealing the title by finishing quickest in Friday's second practice.

The McLaren driver is fourth in the drivers' championship heading into Sunday's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, requiring a race win, and a flop from his rivals, to claim the title.

The Englishman clocked a time of 1.40.888 seconds on the Yas Marina circuit, just 0.609 seconds slower than Sebastian Vettel's course record set last year.

Red Bull's Vettel was second in the afternoon session, with a best time of 1.41.145 seconds, more than a quarter of a second behind Hamilton.

Championship leader Fernando Alonso vastly improved on his best time in the morning session, going almost three seconds faster in 1.41.314 in his Ferrari.

Australian Mark Webber was fourth fastest in 1.41.315, with a break to Robert Kubica for Renault, who was 0.688 seconds off Hamilton.

Alonso's team-mate Felipe Massa was sixth in 1.41.583, while all other drivers were more than a second slower than McLaren's Hamilton.

The third practice session will take place on Saturday with qualifying to get underway in the afternoon.
