Hamilton out-guns pole-sitter Rosberg off the line and makes the decisive pass into Turn 1 as the Silver Arrows streak away from the pack.
By lap 16 Ricciardo is forcing Red Bull to tell Vettel, “Daniel is quicker than you” and the Australian is through.
In the first half of the race there is a ding-dong battle between the two Force India men, Hulkenberg complaining that Perez has forced him off the track at one point.
After 41 laps the Safety Car has to intervene when Maldonado’s Lotus, exiting pit lane, spears into Gutierrez’s Sauber as it turns into T1 and launches the Mexican’s car into a barrel-roll. Gutierrez emerges unscathed; Maldonado is given a drive-through penalty. Earlier Jean-Eric Vergne has complained bitterly over the radio about Maldonado’s strong-arm tactics.
Senior Mercedes man Paddy Lowe comes on the radio to tell both drivers to bring their cars home – but they lay on a superb struggle before Hamilton claims his 24th Grand Prix victory. It is the third straight Mercedes win of 2014 and their second consecutive 1-2 finish. Their dominance is underlined in the 10 laps after the Safety Car goes in: the gap from Rosberg back to third-placed Perez is 22.982 seconds!
Drive of the Day
Split decision: Hamilton for a stellar performance in keeping Rosberg at bay after the Safety Car went in, Ricciardo for fighting back from 13th on the grid after his Malaysia penalty and coming through to fourth – beating teammate Vettel in the process. These are the first points ‘Danny Ric’, as F1 people are calling him, has scored for Red Bull.
1 Rosberg - 61 points
2 Hamilton - 50 points
3 Hulkenberg - 28 points
4 Alonso - 26 points
5 Button - 23 points
6 Vettel - 23 points
