It’s go time for Melbourne, as Rolex claims pole position

The clock is ticking and with just under forty days until the spotlight is on Melbourne, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation has announced Rolex as the Title Sponsor for the 2013 Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix.

A high octane launch event featuring the F1® Two-Seater on ice heralded the new partnership and built excitement ahead of the event which will kick off the Formula 1® season next month.

The announcement marks the beginning of Rolex’s Global Partnership with Formula 1® and demonstrates the weight and importance of the Australian race in the fast approaching 2013 FIA Formula One World Championship™ season.

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu declared the new partnership a wonderful result for Melbourne and the event itself.

“This is an incredibly exciting announcement for Melbourne and our state. It highlights the attention and respect Melbourne, as the season opener, commands internationally. There are few sporting events in Australia that have the global visibility of Formula One,” Mr Baillieu said.


“The Australian Grand Prix is widely regarded as one of the best Formula One events of the year and it is a feature of Victoria’s unrivalled major events calendar,” he added.

Chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Ron Walker, expects the Rolex partnership to further drive the success of the event.

“Rolex has signed a new global deal with Formula One and has chosen Australia as the best place to launch this new partnership,” he said.

“Rolex aligns its brand with world class events including Wimbledon and the US Open golf, this new agreement reflects the way the world views Melbourne and the 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.”

“Breathtaking images of our city, its beaches and the bay will be broadcast to millions of viewers around the world when they tune in to watch the 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at our picturesque street circuit,” Mr Walker added.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Louise Asher, was thrilled to hear the news of the partnership, coming in such a significant milestone year for the event, which is celebrating 60 years since the first Australian Grand Prix was held at Albert Park.

“Victoria's major events calendar is vital to Victoria's tourism success and the partnership with Rolex is further backing to this major events calendar. Melbourne is looking forward to welcoming guests from interstate and overseas to enjoy the 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix, a premiere global sporting event,” commented Ms. Asher.

“The announcement comes as the event is shaping up to be one of the best ever,” noted Andrew Westacott, CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.

“Grandstand sales are currently tracking more than 10 per cent higher than the same time last year and we have given the green light to build an additional grandstand to cope with demand,” he added.

“Importantly also, corporate sales are strong and new facilities are being constructed to cater for the expected increase in sales. Sponsorship is also tracking well ahead with both domestic and international brands committing to multi-year agreements.”
