Melbourne to host F1 season opener in 2012

The World Motorsport Council confirmed overnight that Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit will host Round One of the 2012 FIA Formula 1™ World Championship from 15-18 March.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Westacott said the spotlight will be on Melbourne as we once again host the sought-after season opener.

“There is something exciting and special about a new season in any sport and we can’t wait to showcase our race and city to the world in 2012,” he said.

The World Motorsport Council has also confirmed that the Turkish Grand Prix will be dropped from the 20-race calendar for 2012 after failing to extend their contract with Formula One Management.

The United States will host their race, the first since 2007, in Austin, Texas in November and Bahrain has been pushed back to fourth race after Australia, Malaysia and China.
