Pirelli reveals 18-inch F1 tyre at Silverstone test

31 MAR - 03 APR 2016

Jules Bianchi topped the final day of Formula One testing at Silverstone for Ferrari, while Pirelli unveiled and tested an experimental 18-inch tyre with Lotus.

Bianchi completed 89 laps as a substitute for the injured Kimi Raikkonen, having also driven for regular team Marussia on the first day.

Daniil Kvyat was second quickest for Toro Rosso, with Kevin Magnussen in third. The day’s running came to a premature end after Giedo van der Garde made heavy contact with the barrier with just 20 minutes remaining.

Charles Pic, who ran the Pirelli 18-inch tyre with Lotus ended the day 10th fastest, noticing a significant change on the different rubber.

“It was special to be the first person to try the new Pirelli 18 inch tyres. It was a very early evaluation test and the different tyres and wheels affect the aerodynamics of the car quite a lot, but you could certainly feel that the tyres felt different to those we’re used to on an F1 car,” Pic said.

“It was interesting for me to be part of this very first run to see how they handled and give initial feedback to Pirelli.”

Teams also tested for Pirelli with standard 13-inch tyres, including Red Bull with World Champion Sebastian Vettel, who was ninth quickest.

On the first day Felipe Massa went quickest for Williams, just ahead of Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, who tested a range of aerodynamic concepts.

“It was a successful day, pretty productive,” Ricciardo said. “We got a lot more done than we thought because the rain we were expecting didn’t show up. A lot of what we were doing was for the engineers and aerodynamicists to look over back at the factory, and we’ve given them plenty of data to go on.”

Team’s have just over a week until the next round of the championship, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim on 20 July, the second of three Grands Prix in the month of July.
