Reigning Bathurst 1000 Champion Mark Skaife says his Porsche Carrera Cup debut at the 2011 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix has reminded him of his open-wheeler days.
Before becoming a legend of V8 Supercar racing, Skaife was an open-wheeler king, winning three Australian Drivers’ Championships in Formula Holden.
This weekend, Skaife has added another category to his impressive CV, with his first run in the Porsche Carrera Cup.
Not only is it his first race in a Porsche, it is his first in a left-hand-drive car. But while the Porsche has a roof like a V8 Supercar, Skaife reckons the car is more like an open-wheeler.
“I really enjoyed [driving the car],” said Skaife.
“They achieve their speed so differently [to a V8 Supercar]. They have good mid-corner speed, more like an open-wheeler.”
Skaife finished fourth in the first Carrera Cup race on Friday morning. The second race will be at 3:15pm on Saturday.
