Thrills and spills complete the Mazda3 Celebrity Challenge with Emerton cruising to victory

An action packed week of driver training, festivities and of course racing has wrapped up today with former Socceroo, Brett Emerton, taking out the title of 2014 Mazda3 Celebrity Challenge winner.

Emerton was the clear victor from the beginning when race rival, Australian Cycling Legend Robbie McEwen, stalled his Mazda3 when the lights went green sending him straight to the back of the pack.

Emerton said that the Mazda3 Celebrity Challenge had been one of the best weeks of his life, and winning was just the icing on the cake.

“This whole week has been a fantastic experience; it really took me out of my comfort zone which you don't normally do on a day-to-day basis,” Emerton said.

“I've love cars and I love the speed, so being unrestricted on a race track is a dream come true for me. The people who are here, including the celebrities and those at Mazda, are top people and made it an even better week than what it would have been just driving the cars.”

A surprise second place winner was Grease the Musical Star, Rob Mills, who emerged as the dark horse after being the first to end up in the gravel during driver training at Sandown Raceway earlier in the week.

The thrilling battle for the third and final place on the podium unfolded between Olympic Gold Medallist, Torah Bright, The Bachelor, Tim Robards and TV Presenter, Catriona Rowntree. The three drivers traded barbs, switched positions and inflicted panel damage on each other in one of the most hotly contested Celebrity Challenge driving skirmishes in recent history.

Robards said he was thrilled to make the podium, but that the lasting memory would be the experience as a whole.

“My goal today was to get on the podium, though I knew first or second might be a bit hard,” Robards said.

“I started in fifth place today, and before I knew it I was up into third and battling it out with (Catriona) Rowntree who I was surprised to see up there. It has definitely been a week of firsts, and something I will never forget.”

Further down field, the racing was equally as exhilarating when McEwen made his way back through the pack to lock horns with travel adventurer, Charley Boorman, although it wasn’t long before the competition forced both drivers to retire from the race following heavy collisions with other cars.
