An impressive ‘new boy’ who made the most of his mid-season chance with the Manor team last year (2016), this determined young Frenchman is a graduate of the Mercedes junior driver programme and seen by many as a star of the future.

Ocon took his chance when Indonesian Rio Haryanto was replaced during the mid-season break and made an immediate good impression with a very competent debut display at the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Belgian Grand Prix.

Up against fellow-Mercedes-protégé German Pascal Wehrlein, he acquitted himself well to prove his ability and potential – an achievement confirmed by his switch to Force India, also powered by Mercedes engines, ahead of the highly-rated Wehrlein this year.

Born in Normandy, Ocon impressed in his junior karting career and made rapid progress through his early single-seaters career before winning the FIA F3 Euro Championship in style with the Prema Powerteam in 2014. That season saw him take nine wins and 21 podiums with 15 pole positions and seven fastest laps. He also made his F1® weekend debut with a practice outing for Lotus in Abu Dhabi.

He had more F1® tests in 2015, with Force India, when he also won the GP3 series title with ART and enjoyed an outing in the German DTM series with Mercedes at Hockenheim. That spell helped him land a ‘reserve’ role with Renault, on ‘loan’, in early 2016 when he did well in a run of Friday morning sessions.
