Ricciardo delights fans with another podium finish

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo once again delighted his fans in a big crowd at the Singapore Grand Prix by grabbing second place behind Championship leader Lewis Hamilton in Sunday’s spectacular race.

Ricciardo worked hard but was unable to find a way to beat Hamilton in the rain on the cramped and chaotic Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Afterwards, to roars from the crowd, he joked after four consecutive podium finishes in Singapore: “I just can’t win the bloody thing!”

The Red Bull driver has now finished second in Singapore three years running.

“Honestly, I’m trying,” he said. “I like it around here, but today we didn’t have that Friday pace we showed in practice to have the pace on Mercedes.

“I’m a little bit disappointed to miss out on the win, but I’ve still got to be grateful and happy with another podium.”

Ricciardo said he felt fortunate that he had a bad start and thus avoided being drawn into the collision at the first corner that eliminated both Ferraris and his Red Bull teammate Dutchman Max Verstappen.

“I just kind of watched the chaos unfold in front of me,” he said. “It was probably a good thing that I had a bad start, otherwise I probably would have got caught up in it.

“It just looked like three were trying to go into one. I don’t know whose fault it was, it was just too close.”
