Hamilton takes second title as Rosberg runs out of steam

The fireworks erupted in the night sky as Lewis Hamilton crossed the Abu Dhabi finish line to win the race and seal his second World Championship, but in truth the race that did it turned out something of a damp squib.

Two factors crucial in motor racing – reflexes and reliability – made the difference on a night when the much-hyped double points system thankfully was not required to separate Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

After 18 races and a thousand or so laps, it was a fifth of a second that tipped the scales in Hamilton’s favour.

What it all comes down to...

… is Formula 1 history in the making before our very eyes in the United Arab Emirates this weekend.

For the first time in its 65-year existence Grand Prix racing will award double points to the top 10 drivers in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – and that innovation could be crucial in deciding which driver wins the title.
