Sweden has a proud history of producing top-class racing drivers: think Ronnie Peterson at Lotus for a start, think Gunnar Nilsson in the same team before him, think Stefan Johansson at McLaren and Ferrari – the last Swede to score World Championship points for third place in an Onyx at the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1989.

Can Ericsson slot into that tradition? He brings a wealth of experience to the task, having spent the last four seasons as a GP2 driver without quite reaching the heights of winning that coveted title.

David Coulthard liked what he saw at Albert Park when the 2014 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix got under way – but the 13-time Grand Prix winner wasn’t too sure about what he had heard.

“When you go into a nightclub you’re not expecting to hear Chris de Burgh singing ‘Lady in Red’, are you?” asked DC, who took out the Melbourne race in 1997 and again in 2003 – the last one of those 13 victories.

He says there are a couple of kilos hidden away somewhere on his rangy frame, but Mark Webber still looked lean and mean as he fronted the media at Albert Park on Friday morning for his one and only press conference at the 2014 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Webber, accustomed to endless questioning in his 12 appearances at his home race as a Grand Prix driver, was relaxed as he looked forward to the first of a handful of Grands Prix he will attend in 2014 as a Red Bull athlete.
