Double world champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari said 'a new Formula One' will be unwrapped here in Melbourne this weekend when Sunday's Australian Grand Prix bursts into action.

Kiwi Takes Cup Car Pole

FORMER Formula 1 hopeful Jonny Reid has taken pole position for Friday’s first Porsche Carrera Cup race at the 2011 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix.

The young Kiwi, who has been racing in New Zealand’s Porsche series over the summer, lapped Albert Park in 1:59.0414sec to take pole position.

His time was set in frantic conditions, with two red flag stoppages resulting in a shortened session.

In fact, it was so short that the drivers were only able to do one flying lap after the second stoppage, effectively making it a shoot-out for pole.

Davison Unsure of New System

V8 Supercar driver Alex Davison is concerned that the category’s unique qualifying system for this weekend’s Albert Park 400 at the 2011 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix will be too confusing for the fans.

Following this evening’s qualifying session, the fastest driver will select a random number between eight and 20 out of a hat. The number chosen will determine how much of the top of the grid will be inverted before tomorrow’s Top 10 Shootout.

Stevenson sets the pace in practice for Lexus Celebrity Challenge

Radio king Ross Stevenson has set the fastest time in practice for this weekend’s Lexus Celebrity Challenge at the 2011 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park.

Stevenson, who anchors the top-rating morning shift on Melbourne radio station 3AW, was all class in the slick conditions, finishing at the top of the timesheets ahead of NFL punter Sav Rocca and former rugby league great Luke Ricketson.
