Webber completes his Bolte Bridge drive

Mark Webber flew into Melbourne at 06:30 on Saturday morning – then flew over the city’s landmark Bolte Bridge in a Red Bull-Renault Formula One car as Australia’s own Grand Prix hero began the build-up to next weekend’s 2011 Formula One Qantas Australian Grand Prix.

“It was pretty cool,” said Webber, who completed two ‘laps’ or four lengths of the bridge before driving the car down into the Docklands Waterfront City Piazza to be greeted by a cheering crowd and a large contingent of Australian media.

Team Talk - Virgin Racing

Marussia Virgin Racing

Constructors championship 2010: 12th

New to the F1 scene last year, they remain Virgins in one sense – they have yet to score their maiden World Championship point after what Team Principal John Booth called “a tough but incredibly rewarding baptism”.

They go into 2011 buoyed by a new title partnership with Russian automotive concern Marussia, which was confirmed at the final race of 2010 in Abu Dhabi; it has seen a significant reshuffle behind the scenes.

Team Talk - HRT

Hispania Racing Team

Constructors championship 2010: 11th

It may not look great, but 11th is a mighty result – HRT only just made it to the opening race, where Bruno Senna managed three laps in the first free practice and the other car first ran in qualifying…

Things seem little different in 2011: first practice here on Friday will again be the first time the new car turns a wheel in anger after customs problems delayed vital parts in Spain.
