Albert Park Circuit Modifications Project

AGPC has commenced civil modification and resurfacing works at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit.

The Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit has not been resurfaced since it was originally laid in 1995. The circuit modifications project will incorporate resurfacing in addition to several geometric circuit changes, most noticeably on Lakeside Drive.

In consultation with Parks Victoria, the project will also deliver several community benefits aligned with the Albert Park Master Plan (APMP), including increased lakeside parkland and safer traffic arrangements for road and park users.

The resurfacing and circuit modifications project is being completed in three phases:

  • Phase one included the widening of the pit lane, which has now been completed.
  • The second phase is circuit modification works that will run until July 2021.
  • The final phase is resurfacing works, which is planned to take place following the Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2021 event in November.

Circuit modification works have commenced and expected completion is July 2021. COVID-19 work restrictions or inclement weather may impact this schedule and ongoing updates will be provided.

Updated Road Closures

Scheduled road closures for circuit modification works are detailed below, with further specific dates to be updated if necessary.

As a result of the works undertaken to date, AGPC and its delivery partners have identified the need for additional strengthening of the pavement sub-layers at locations along Lakeside Drive. These works are essential in order to return the road network to the users of Albert Park to the standards expected.

Consultation with traffic authorities has taken place, focusing on minimising the impacts of this delay to key stakeholders and road users. This has resulted in the following adjustments to Albert Park road closures:

Lakeside Drive (Albert Road – Queens Road Slip Road) will be closed until Friday 21 May 2021 to complete remediation works and alleviate the need for any further intermittent closures after reopening.

Intermittent closures of the Lakeside Drive and Ross Gregory Drive intersection to complete the intersection resurfacing works during April and May.

Similarly, Aughtie Drive will require intermittent road closures for milling and resurfacing works throughout May. Information on these intermittent closures will be updated via this page once finalised.

Please note, there will be through-traffic access throughout Albert Park at all times.
