The following information is provided to inform local residents and businesses located around Albert Park of changes to the surrounding areas as a result of the 2018 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Ahead of the 2018 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix, we would like to take this opportunity to advise you of the infrastructure installation and dismantling process associated with the event.

The event will be staged at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit from Thursday 22 until Sunday 25 March 2018.

While every effort will be made to minimise disruption to park users and the local community, some activities may occur at times outside those listed due to minor alterations to the works schedule.

General Community Information 

The following information is provided to inform local residents and businesses located around Albert Park of changes to the surrounding areas as a result of the Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix. Download the full Community Information Guide here. 

The  Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix will be staged from 22 to 26 March. Grand Prix and motorsport related activities will also take place from Thursday 22 March starting at 7:25am until approximately 5:45pm on Sunday 25 March.  Further information regarding track activity and the track schedule* is available at www.grandprix.com.au/event/track-schedule.

From 12.01am Monday 19 March to 11:59pm Monday 25 March Albert Park Reserve will be closed to the public. Access to the park will only be gained by presenting a valid event credential or valid ticket on event days.

Our Community Relations Office will be established in Albert Park adjacent to Gate 1 near the Middle Park Station underpass in the lead up to the event. This is to assist with any community related matters and for the distribution of Local Access Permits to eligible residents and businesses. The Community Relations Office will be open from Monday 12 March to Sunday 25 March.

 

Local Access Zones

The City of Port Phillip council has allocated a Local Access Zone (LAZ) across the four event days in surroundings areas of Albert Park to ensure vehicles of patrons attending the event are kept to a minimum in local areas. Free LAZ permits will be issued to eligible residents and businesses within the Local Access Zone in February 2018.

Residents and business residing within the Local Access Zone will be automatically sent two LAZ permits. The LAZ extends further to surrounding areas come the Saturday and Sunday of the event. Please see Local Access Only Zone maps for Thursday and Friday and for Saturday and Sunday.

Only vehicles displaying this permit will be allowed to access LAZ areas during the event. Selected perimeter roads will be closed and access will be restricted to certain entry points during the event. Access at these entry points will be controlled by security engaged by the City of Port Phillip. If you have any concerns, please contact the City of Port Phillip on (03) 9209 6777.

Please note LAZ permits are for access only and DO NOT override local government parking regulations/restrictions. The City of Port Phillip are responsible for providing households and businesses temporary parking permits over the event days. If you do not receive temporary parking permits and believe you are entitled to receive them, please contact the City of Port Phillip on (03) 9209 6777.

Public Transport Information

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has worked closely with public transport operators to encourage patrons attending the event to use public transport to reduce traffic entering the local area.

Changes will affect the following services during the event:

  • Tram route 96 – St Kilda light rail
    • Thursday and Friday additional services
    • Saturday and Sunday, shortened service on line 96 (0530 – 2030 East Brunswick to Spencer Street – Bus replacement service to operate between Spencer Street
  • Tram Route 12 – Clarendon Street
    • Thursday and Friday no change
    • Saturday and Sunday will run express between Collins and Spencer Street to City Road including additional tram services and bus replacements will supplement the current timetabled service
  • Tram Route 16 – Fitzroy Street
    • Thursday & Friday no change
    • Saturday & Sunday operates a shortened service

Alternatively, buses have been allocated to replace tram route 96, to minimise any inconvenience.

Light Rail GP Express

Spencer Street (Corner Collins Street) to Gates 1 & 2

  • Thursday & Friday: Trams will run as per usual schedule (not express). Peak Times: 8-7-minute intervals 
  • Saturday & Sunday: Peak Times: 4-5 minute intervals

Clarendon Street GP Express

Spencer Street (Corner Collins Street) to Gates 3

  • Thursday & Friday: Trams will run as per usual schedule (not express). Peak Times: 8-10 minute intervals.
  • Saturday & Sunday: 5-6 minute intervals.

St Kilda Road GP Shuttle

Swanston Street (outside Federation Square) to Gates 5, 8, 9, & 10

  • Thursday & Friday: Peak Times: 3 minute intervals.
  • Saturday & Sunday: Peak Times: 2 minute intervals.

Peak Times

  • Thursday & Friday: 8:00am – 10:00am and 4:45pm – 6:15pm
  • Saturday & Sunday: 9:00am – 1:30pm and 4:30pm – 8:30pm

Off Peak Times

  • Thursday & Friday: normal weekday timetable
  • Saturday & Sunday: normal Saturday timetable

The above services are free for GP ticket holders between the city and the circuit*

NOTE: Normal tram fares apply on other tram routes that operate past the Circuit. The Light Rail GP Express will operate express between Southern Cross Station (Spencer Street) and Gates 1,2. The Clarendon GP Express will not stop between Spencer Street and City Road on Saturday and Sunday (but will stop at all stops from City Rd onward). Road Closures

Albert Park Reserve remains open to the general public with the exception of the Grand Prix Race period (22 - 26 March). However, motorists, park tenants and park users should note that there will be periods of restricted access on certain days pre and post the Grand Prix Race Period.

Access to Lakeside Drive between Albert Road & Ross Gregory Drive and the road linking Lakeside & Queens Road (South of the Lago Lounge) are closed with access restricted to AGPC and Parks Victoria approved users only.

Aughtie Drive and other roads within the park will be most affected outside of the Race Period as detailed below:

Infrastructure Installation and Dismantle Activities

Throughout the duration of the Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix regular access to Albert Park Reserve may be affected due to the installation and dismantle of infrastructure. For more information on areas and times affected please click here to see the Infrastructure Installation and Dismantle plan. This plan illustrates the location and time for the infrastructure installation and dismantling process associated with the Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix. Whilst every effort will be made to minimise disruption to park users and the local community, some activities may happen at times outside those outlined in this document due to unforeseen circumstances. Any changes will be made in consultation with Parks Victoria and other affected parties where possible and appropriate.
Restricted Parking 

Parking restrictions will be imposed during the event for areas within the Cities of Port Phillip, Stonnington and Melbourne. Areas include: unrestricted access and some changed parking restrictions at the time of the event. Please note relevant Councils are responsible for distributing additional or temporary parking permits when required. Contact your local Council with any concerns:

General Park Users

Outside the Grand Prix Race Period all of Albert Park remains open for use by the community except for fenced construction sites and controlled work areas.

Signage will indicate restricted areas whilst infrastructure is being erected and dismantled. Please obey these signs for your safety.

Motorists, park tenants and park users should note that there will be periods of restricted access on Lakeside Drive, Aughtie Drive and other roads within the park on certain days.

 

Cyclists

Access will be maintained for cyclists on all park roads except during access periods and the Grand Prix Race Period. Clearly signed detours will be provided during the restricted access periods on park roads and other pathways where necessary. Please obey these signs for your safety. Cyclists should be aware that temporary speed humps will be installed on some shared pathways.

Noise Levels

Event activities will occur from Wednesday 21 March to Sunday 25 March from approximately 7:30am – 6:30pm daily. Event activities may be loud (e.g. track activity and air displays). The use of soft foam disposable earplugs are advised for residents whom would like to reduce the noise levels. 

Please be aware that a fireworks display is planned for Wednesday Night, 21 March. It is recommended that pets sensitive to noise be kept indoors during the display. Aerial activities and flyovers will occur at the Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix. These activities may be loud. Security

Pre, during and post the Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix there will be security on site at Albert Park. For any security concerns or enquires please email communityrelations@grandprix.com.au or call 9258 7134. 

Access to businesses in Albert Park Reserve 

Outside of the Grand Prix Race Period, commercial premises operating in Albert Park remain open for business. For further information on hours of operation and access to these businesses please contact the business directly or contact Parks Victoria on 13 19 63 or www.parkweb.vic.gov.au.
 
Access to premises within this area requires a Local Access Zone Permit. You can obtain a permit on request through the Community Relations Office. Email communityrelations@grandprix.com.au or call (03) 9258 7134, they are also available at three of the City of Port Phillip Town Halls:
  • South Melbourne Town Hall; 208-220 Bank Street, South Melbourne.
  • St Kilda Town Hall; Corner Brighton Road and Carlisle Street, St Kilda.
  • Port Melbourne Town Hall; 333 Bay Street, Port Melbourne.
Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre

MSAC remains open throughout the Grand Prix Race Period. Access and car parking for MSAC during the Grand Prix Race Period from Tuesday 22 to Sunday 25 March will be via the multi deck car park with entry and exit only from the Albert Road and Cecil Street intersection. The Southern car park will be closed during this time.
 
To gain entry into the car park, a Melbourne Sports Hub membership card is required. There will be no access through the entry off Aughtie Drive between Tuesday 22 to Monday 26 March inclusive. Foot traffic into the facility will be via the Aquatic entry adjacent to the multi deck car park.
As a result of the Grand Prix and the increased activity around the park, to ensure you get to MSAC on time we suggest you:
  • Leave earlier than you would normally
  • Consider parking further from MSAC and walking to the facility
  • Use public transport

Parks Victoria

Community Health Services and Emergencies Services

All community health services will operate normally. For emergency assistance telephone 000. Emergency vehicles have 24 hour access to the area.

Schools

Schools will notify parents directly of any changes to normal daily procedures. Middle Park Primary School is located within the Local Access Only Zone area. If you require a permit to access Middle Park Primary for drop off and pick up of school children please contact the Community Relations Office communityrelations@grandprix.com.au or on (03) 9258 7134 to secure a permit before the Grand Prix Race Period.

Community Playground

The Community Playground next to the Middle Park Bowls Club will remain open except during the Grand Prix Race Period (22-25 March). The playground will be accessible via the Middle Park underpass car park or via Aughtie Drive.

Alcohol Consumption in Public

Local laws will be in place to prohibit the consumption or possession of alcohol in unsealed containers in any public place, other than in licensed premises, from Monday 21 to Monday 26 March 2018 inclusive. The City of Melbourne has also declared major events alcohol free in streets and reserves inclusive of the Formula 1® 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Pets and Dog Walkers

It is recommended that pets sensitive to noise be kept indoors during Formula 1 sessions and aerial displays. Dogs can be walked in Albert Park as usual with the exception of fenced work areas and during the Grand Prix Race Period.
