There’s varying levels of bravado that permeate the F1® driver core, with some trying to convince themselves they belong at the front, and others making excuses that they’re not.
And then there’s George Russell, who is as realistic as it gets. Those traits are a strong platform from which to build after a 2023 that he didn’t see coming, nor one that went his way.
Eighth and the worst-performing driver from F1’s best three teams sounds dire, even more so after he beat teammate Lewis Hamilton in 2022. But they’re numbers without nuance.
Russell felt his conversation rate of opportunities to results was 50-50 last season after taking nearly every chance he got in 2022; his retirement in Australia after leading and then unluckily pitting just before a red flag was especially painful.
Disappointed and frustrated? Sure. But reasoned and unwavering in his self-belief? Equally true. Expect a swift bounce-back.
