Lance Stroll leaves you wanting more. Seven seasons for three podiums and a single top-10 championship finish isn’t incredible, but far from unacceptable. If his surname was, perhaps, different from that of billionaire businessman father Lawrence’s, would the 25-year-old polarise opinions so much?
You could argue he wouldn’t be on the grid but for dad’s deep pockets, but that’s a touch unfair; Lance won three feeder class titles before he arrived at Williams in 2017, and shows first-lap ruthlessness and wet-weather ability that’s absolutely top-shelf. There’s some bulldog beneath that bank balance, too; Stroll’s sixth in Bahrain last year after breaking his wrist in a cycling accident two weeks prior was hugely meritorious.
There were no podiums last year (while teammate Fernando Alonso had eight), suggesting that he’s a mid-grid talent in a mid-grid car. Is that a bad thing? Given Aston had its best season yet, not at all.
