Mercedes needed time, and time was something Lewis Hamilton decided that, at 39, he didn’t have. And so came the biggest story of the 2024 pre-season – of any pre-season, really – that the sport’s most successful driver/team partnership would be coming to an abrupt end after this year.
Will 2024 be a celebration of what that marriage achieved, or a 24-race lament of what once was? On balance, it’s too early to say, but while Hamilton and team principal Toto Wolff have a friendship that stretches beyond the paddock, it’ll undoubtedly be a strange season.
If Mercedes can show signs of moving forwards this year, expect Hamilton to demonstrate that he’s lost little. Last year’s third place in the championship was down to consistency more than the force-of-nature pace he showed in his Mercedes pomp, but signing with Ferrari for multiple years indicates Hamilton’s ambition hasn’t withered with his advancing years.
