You would think that replacing Spain’s greatest racing driver would be a tough job, and it might be unless you have already spent your whole life carrying the name of another great Spanish motorsport hero.
Carlos Sainz Jr brings a shining Formula 1® CV to McLaren, having left Renault to replace Fernando Alonso. He was tenth in the Drivers’ Championship points last season and getting close to that with McLaren in 2019 will be a good result.
At 24, Sainz is ideally placed to be a team leader, mixing youthful enthusiasm with experience. While at Toro Rosso Sainz was fighting to step up to Red Bull, before moving into a more harmonious relationship at Renault with Nico Hülkenberg. With McLaren he knows he is the ‘senior’ driver, and that looks like a very good fit with him.
Sainz is familiar with Renault engines and, once he gels with McLaren, he is a man worth keeping an eye on.
