Three years ago, life for Daniil Kvyat was looking good. He was in his second season in F1®, driving for Red Bull Racing alongside Daniel Ricciardo and then, Max Verstappen happened.
Almost without warning, Kvyat swapped seats with the Dutch prodigy, who won his first race with Red Bull. The Russian stayed with Toro Rosso until mid-2017, when he was replaced by Pierre Gasly. By the end of the season, he was out of Formula 1® – just like that.
But Kvyat kept the faith. Last year he was Ferrari’s test driver, spending a lot of time working with the team’s engineering group, learning as much as he could. When Toro Rosso decided to give him a second chance, he wasted no time scraping off the rust, setting fast testing times straight away.
At 24, and with more than 70 Grand Prix starts under his belt, Kvyat could well find himself in the thick of the mid-field fight.
