It is difficult to believe that Sergio Perez is only 29, because the man they call ‘Checo’ seems to have been in F1® for ages. He made his debut at Albert Park back in 2011 and since then Perez has put in some some shining performances for Sauber, McLaren and Force India but the Mexican is yet to win his first Grand Prix.
He could do it. Perez has stood on the podium eight times, most recently in Azerbaijan last year. With his innate speed and an ability to make his tyres last, he could repeat that feat this year. While the 2019 season will be a rebuilding one for the team, Perez is the ideal driver to lead Racing Point forward.
The Mexican Grand Prix has become one of the sport’s biggest parties and Perez has played a leading role in the success of his home race.
If he has a competitive race at Albert Park, you might just hear his countrymen cheering all the way from Melbourne.
