While Stoffel Vandoorne’s first full season in Formula 1® was tough, the Belgian driver showed glimpses of his star quality in 2017.
Vandoorne began his career aged six, and like most F1® racers of the future, he impressed in karting. He graduated to single-seaters in 2010 and promptly won the F4 Eurocup series with six victories.
In 2012, he won the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 series before joining the McLaren Young Driver programme a year later. That helped him progress further by finishing second in his maiden GP2 campaign with ART in 2014, and then winning it in 2015.
Standing in for the injured Fernando Alonso in 2016, Vandoorne secured a point on his F1® debut at Sakhir, where he shone alongside 2009 world champion Jenson Button and did more than enough to prove he was ready for promotion, if the time came.
Button’s retirement gave him that chance, with Vandoorne collecting 13 points despite McLaren’s engine troubles with Honda in 2017.
