For much of 2018 Valtteri Bottas was the faithful number two to Lewis Hamilton but his season could have been much, much better.
Had the winds blown his way the Finn could have won three of the first five races, and placed himself in real contention for a maiden Drivers’ title. As it was, mechanical problems and plain back luck conspired to keep him off the top step of the podium for the whole season. In his sixth year in Formula 1®, and second with Mercedes-Benz, he went on to finish fifth in the Drivers’ Championship.
Yet there were times when Bottas looked every bit Hamilton’s equal, particularly in Russia, where he conceded the lead – and the win – to his teammate for the good of the team.
At 29, Bottas will be looking for a much better season in 2019, particularly as the team has promising Frenchman Esteban Ocon, 22, waiting in the wings as its reserve driver.
