Matt Campbell will lead the 19-car field away in Thursday's opening race in the Porsche Carrera Cup program at the 2016 Formula 1 ® Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.
After starting from second on the grid in 2015, Campbell has gone one better this year, with his fastest lap of 1:58.4412 just shy of the five-year-old lap record held by Ben Barker (1:58.3646).
Current championship leader Nick McBride (1:58.9734) will start alongside Campbell, with the second row to be filled by class rookie Ash Walsh (1:59.0547) — a two-time Australian karting champion — and the returning Dean Fiore (1:59.1157).
Fast laps at the death knell of the 20-minute qualifying session by Walsh and Fiore pushed Steve Richards (1:59.1388) and practice pacesetter Alex Davidson (1:59.3577) back to the third row. Richards and McBride shared wins in last year's Carrera Cup races at Albert Park.
David Wall (1:59.922) and Dylan O'Keefe (2:00.044) will start from seventh and eighth.
Meanwhile Michael Almond, who lies second in the 2016 standings behind McBride, will have some work to do after qualifying well back in 11th position.
Race one, over 25 minutes, will be held at 5:35pm.
