Relationship with Ricciardo is much better - Ocon

Renault driver Esteban Ocon has revealed his relationship with new teammate Daniel Ricciardo is “definitely” better than what he has experienced in the past.

Ocon regularly clashed with Sergio Perez during his two-year stint at Force India as the former built a reputation for being one of the best young drivers in Formula 1®.

Ocon finished eighth in the 2017 world championship but left Force India at the end of 2018 to join world champions Mercedes as a reserve driver.

The Frenchman joined Renault ahead of the 2020 season and is expected to provide more competition to Ricciardo than Nico Hulkenberg did last year.

Asked by Autosport about his friendship with Ricciardo, compared to Perez, Ocon said: “What happened in Force India is not something I want to re-do again.

“It was not a nice atmosphere. It didn’t slow down the team or anything, but the atmosphere between us was not so good.

“On track we came close too many times, that was clear. That was not good.

“It’s not something I want to do again.”

Ocon added that things looked brighter at Renault ahead of the 2020 campaign.

“Definitely the atmosphere is a lot better between me and Daniel than it was with ‘Checo’ [Perez],” he said.

“So I think if we can keep working like that, even though it’s going to be different on track, it’s going to be a lot better, just for everyone, just to have a positive energy and a great working environment.

“Hopefully we’re going to be solid on that topic and be able to push the team forward.

“We don’t want to have that [crashes] happening.”

‘Daniel will need that rocket’

Ex-Formula 1® driver Mark Webber has tipped fellow Australian Ricciardo to benefit from his new partnership with Ocon in 2020.

Speaking to grandprix.com.au, Webber said: “A young charger [is] in the other car now, with Esteban Ocon … Daniel will need that rocket.

“He really does like having a really tough teammate.

“I’m not saying Hulkenberg wasn’t tough, but I think that Ocon will be another change of gear and that’ll be something that Daniel will – I think he’ll lift for.”
