Ricciardo to unveil ‘funky’ new look in Melbourne

Daniel Ricciardo Barcelona Testing Helmet

Australia’s own Daniel Ricciardo will arrive at next weekend’s home Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 with a fresh helmet design.

The 29-year-old is set to debut his new paint job at the season-opening race in Melbourne, where he will make his Renault F1 Team debut on the streets of Albert Park.

After a 10-year relationship with Red Bull, the seven-time Grand Prix winner is ready to express a new side of himself as he embarks on a new chapter with Renault.

Ricciardo had a new helmet design at F1® pre-season testing in Barcelona, which he says is a sign of things to come in Melbourne.

“This helmet has got a bit of coverage [during pre-season], so this has been a ‘test’ concept if you want to call it,” Ricciardo said. “But I’ve been working with an Australian artist, and he has been working on it for quite a few months.

“It will come out in Melbourne, but it is certainly going to be different. It is not going to be traditional and typical with a halo and lines that mean nothing. I am trying to get away from the typical helmet these days, so it should be funky. It is kind of artistic in a modern way.”

Ricciardo is excited to finally start the highly anticipated new season at Albert Park.

“There is something pretty awesome in starting the season at home,” Ricciardo said. “There is added excitement behind that. For me, I like being in Australia, period. It is a nice country.

“We had quite a big break since Abu Dhabi, (last year’s season finale). [It’s] a long time in which you don’t really compete, so just to compete on home soil is cool. And going now with a new team and arriving there with a new team that is another added bit of excitement. It is good to get started, I think.”

Ricciardo will appear at the Formula 1® Season Launch at Federation Square on Wednesday 13 March, joining the rest of the grid and 10 Team Principals on stage, before the Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 on 14-17 March.
