Ricciardo 'very satisfied' with Monza breakthrough

Australian Daniel Ricciardo recorded his best result in Renault colours at the Italian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo, who moved from Red Bull Racing for the 2019 season, took fourth place in Monza.

His teammate Nico Hulkenberg crossed the line in fifth, capping a memorable weekend for Renault.

“We deserved that today,” Ricciardo said. “It matches my best ever result here in Monza and to do it with Renault is great.

“I saw the battles happening at the front and I thought there could be a big opportunity to score strong points. I’m really happy for myself and also for the team.”

Ricciardo’s previous best result for Renault was a sixth-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix in June.

“To get the team’s best result since returning to Formula One in fourth and fifth at a power circuit really complements Renault and their hard work,” he added.

“The race pace was really good and it’s a nice reward for the team. The result is long overdue this year, I’m very satisfied now.”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took the chequered flag in Italy, his second consecutive victory, followed by Mercedes duo Valtteri Bottas and championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

Ricciardo returns to the track later this month at the Singapore Grand Prix on 20-22 September.
