In his first season for Mercedes, Valterri Bottas put together a consistent 2017, recording three wins. He also added 10 podium finishes outside of those wins, to take third place in the Drivers’ Championship.
Bottas, who began his karting career aged six, revelled in the speed and competition and began his quest to emulate the feats of his hero, two-time champion Mika Hakkinen.
He debuted in 2013 for Williams but was only able to score four points throughout the entire season. With the 2014 Formula 1® engine changes, Bottas was able to show his true potential with six podium finishes.
“Quite simply, he is one of the most talented young drivers I have come across,” said Sir Frank Williams at the time. “We expect great things from him.”
Bottas was contracted to Williams for a fifth season in 2017 but – when Nico Rosberg announced his retirement – Mercedes were able to negotiate a deal with Williams to buy out the contact. The 2017 season was Bottas’s best campaign to date.
