Pierre Gasly, or "PIER-EEEE GAAAS-LYYYYYYY!" as he was dubbed by Daniel Ricciardo, has had his journey to Formula 1® was shaped by years of success through the junior ranks, however Gasly’s career defining moment must be the 20th Italian Grand Prix in 2020 at Monza.
Driving for Scuderia AlphaTauri the Frenchman delivered can only be described as one of the sport's great underdog victories. A sequence of events that included a well-timed pitstop, penalty to Lewis Hamilton and brilliant re-start after a red flag saw Pierre Gasly an unlikely leader, forced to defend Carlos Sainz in a McLaren for the final 25 laps.
The final half hour of this race was edge-of-your-seat viewing and was capped with a euphoric team radio message as Gasly crossed the line 0.4 seconds ahead of Sainz in disbelief and sheer joy.
"YEEEEES! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD GUYS. WE DID IT?! WHAT DID WE JUST DO?!"
The win marked Pierre Gasly’s first win in Formula 1®, the first for AlphaTauri (formerly Toro Rosso) at their home track since 2008, and made Gasly the first French race winner in Formula 1® since Olivier Panis in 1996.
Fast, resilient and impossible not to admire, Pierre Gasly is a fan favourite at Albert Park and living proof that Formula 1® careers aren't always a straight line. Sometimes the scenic route makes for a much better story.
