Esteban Ocon's Formula 1® story begins a long way from the glamour, celebrity lifestyle that most people associate with the sport.
As a child chasing a racing dream, Ocon's family sold their house and much of what they owned to fund his karting career, spending years travelling the European racing circuit while living out of a caravan. It's one of Formula 1®'s most remarkable family sacrifices and a reminder that Formula 1® careers are not always forged through privilege.
Standing at around 186cm, Ocon has spent much of his career being one of the tallest drivers on the grid, a detail that often feels slightly at odds with the famously compact dimensions of a Formula 1® cockpit.
His career-defining moment arrived at the chaotic 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. A massive first-lap crash, a bizarre single-car grid restart and an epic defensive duel saw Ocon hold off four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel during a tense final stint and claim a shock maiden Formula 1® victory.
From the kid that once travelled Europe in a caravan and nearly saw his racing dream disappear, Esteban Ocon has gone on to race for more than a decade at the sport’s top level. Not bad for someone who was once only a few twists of fate away from serving fries instead of spraying champagne.
