Biography

Sergio Perez or “Checo” as he’s more commonly referred to, has spent much of his Formula 1® career proving that patience can be a seriously effective racing strategy.

While some drivers arrive with immediate fanfare, Perez built his reputation over years of hard-fought midfield battles, clever race craft and an uncanny ability to make a set of tyres last far longer than anyone thought possible. Somewhere along the way, he became known as the grid's undisputed "Tyre Whisperer".

The Mexican's journey to Formula 1® was anything but straightforward. Leaving home as a teenager to chase racing opportunities in Europe, Perez arrived with considerable sacrifice behind him and the hopes of a nation that had not produced a regular Formula 1® frontrunner in generations.

Checo’s breakthrough Formula 1® victory finally arrived at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, where he recovered from last place on the opening lap to claim a remarkable first win. It remains one of the sport's great underdog victories and a result that felt overdue after years of near misses.

Wherever Formula 1® travels, the sea of Mexican flags is never far away. That's because Perez has become more than just a driver to his supporters. He’s living proof that a kid from Guadalajara could make it to the very top of motorsport and for a generation of Mexican fans, Checo hasn’t just been a part of Formula 1® - he’s helped them feel like they belonged there too.
