Oscar Piastri moves up to FIA F2 with PREMA Racing

Tuesday, 1 December 2020

The Australian earned his shot with a stellar F3 rookie season.

PREMA Racing is delighted to announce that Oscar Piastri will join the team's FIA Formula 2 Championship operation for the 2021 season. The 19-year-old Australian will take part in the 2020 post-season test at Bahrain International Circuit.

A native of Melbourne, Piastri won the Formula Renault Eurocup title back in 2019 before moving up to the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Prema and experiencing an outstanding rookie season. After cruising to the 2020 FIA F3 title at the end of a cliffhanger finale in Mugello, he will now begin his preparations to make a further step up the single-seater ladder.

The test at the Al Sakhir venue, which will host the opening round of the new season, will mark the beginning of a new endeavour for Piastri, who will rely on the team's expertise to get a head start for 2021.

René Rosin - Team Principal

"We are delighted to welcome Oscar to our FIA Formula 2 team. Not only he is a talented racer with outstanding speed skills. He has a clear understanding of the complexities of today's motorsports and he is extremely adaptable.

"Having witnessed his progress and success throughout the 2020 season, taking our relationship to the next step for the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship felt like the natural thing to do and we look forward to having him on-track right from Bahrain."

"Prema has proven to be the team to beat once again in F2 this year, so I’m extremely happy to be moving into the championship with them. I’m very grateful to stay a part of the Prema family, and I’m looking forward to plenty more pizza and pasta!”
