The New York-born rookie showcased his potential with a commanding performance at Albert Park, leading a dramatic season opener for the FIA Formula 3™ championship.

One of the rising stars in world motorsport took the opening Feature Race of the season when Ugo Ugochukwu took a dominant win over 23 laps. The 18-year-old from New York marked himself as a driver of the future during the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026.

He swept around the outside of early leader and teammate Théophile Nael at the flat-out Turn 9. Ugochukwu then built a consistent lead that he maintained until the end of the race.

Not even two mid-race Full Course Yellow periods could derail the rookie, who secured his maiden victory as the race finished behind a Safety Car. Behind him, a fierce battle for the podium places unfolded throughout the morning.

Freddie Slater impressed on his debut weekend, taking second position after a polished drive. The 17-year-old Audi Junior Driver snatched the spot from Nael with an opportunistic move at Turn 9 with six laps remaining.

Théophile Nael initially crossed the line in third but was demoted after receiving a five-second penalty for a jumped start. This triggered a shuffle in the final standings as several other front-runners also faced post-race sanctions.

Noah Stromsted was briefly promoted to third before receiving a 10-second penalty for causing contact, dropping him to 24th. Nicola Lacorte suffered a similar fate, falling to 24th after being penalized for his own jumped start.

Ultimately, Japan’s Taito Kato was elevated to the final podium position for ART Grand Prix. The Honda-backed driver had made significant progress through the field before the second Safety Car appeared.

Sprint Race winner Bruno del Pino finished fourth, followed by Maciej Gladysz and Enzo Deligny. Notably, Australians James Wharton and Louis Sharp were both absent from the grid.

Following a consultation with the FIA Medical Team after their Saturday crash, PREMA Racing made the decision to rest both drivers. With a question mark over the Bahrain round, the championship is expected to resume in Monaco this June.
