Ricciardo's gift for Hamilton

Tuesday, 15 December 2020

The Aussie joins In the Fast Lane to wrap up the 2020 F1® season.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation podcast In the Fast Lane has released this week’s episode with Formula 1® driver, Daniel Ricciardo.

Ricciardo joined In the Fast Lane co-hosts Matt Clayton and Michael Lamonato to rank the ten best Formula 1® drivers of 2020, reflect on the end of his two-year stint at Renault, look ahead to joining McLaren in 2021 and answer some questions from listeners.

After ranking himself in first position, Ricciardo then agrees that Lewis Hamilton, who he refers to as “Mr Consistent”, should take the second spot.

“The consistency of him being able to do it, and the few mistakes as well, he’s normally nailing his starts, he’s clean, he just executes well when it counts and that’s really what separates the good and the great in this sport,” Ricciardo said.

Ricciardo goes on to discusses his former teammate Max Verstappen’s rise through the ranks, and when he believes it all really kicked off for him.

“He definitely did a large step of his development through 2016 and then 2017. I also felt like the new cars that we changed to the bigger tyres and all that in 2017, I felt like having more grip actually helped him or suited him as well so I felt he was obviously already doing really well and then those cars were actually more for him as well,” he continued.

In response to one of the listener questions, Ricciardo explained his process for his ‘Shoey’ shoes and his special gift to Hamilton.

“What I do is I air them out. I keep those as little trophies. But I actually, because Lewis did his first, I signed the one he drank out of and gave it to him at the next race, so he’s now got something probably more meaningful than seven world titles,” Ricciardo joked.

The podcast is available on Spotify, Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts platforms.
