Tough day at home for Australian contingent in Melbourne

A sighting lap crash for Oscar Piastri and a medical withdrawal for James Wharton left local fans without their top stars for Sunday’s premier races.
Sunday was not a good day for the Australian drivers at the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026. Hopes of a great result for Oscar Piastri were over before the race even began when the Melbourne driver lost control of his McLaren-Mercedes.
He smashed into a concrete wall while on the formation lap, ending his afternoon before he could reach his fifth grid slot. There was nothing the 24-year-old could do to salvage the situation, and he was forced to watch the race unfold from the pits.

The wait for the first local winner since 1980, or even a home podium finish, will now extend for at least another year. Piastri and the rest of the grid now look forward to next week’s Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit.
It was an equally difficult Sunday for FIA Formula 3™ fans as James Wharton did not even make it to the grid. His PREMA Racing team withdrew the car as a precaution following his heavy collision with teammate Louis Sharp on Saturday.
After consulting medical officials, the team chose to sit both Wharton and Sharp out of the Feature Race. The Australian now faces a month-long wait for the championship to resume at the Bahrain International Circuit in April.
The only other Australian in the field, Patrick Heuzenroeder, managed to complete the 23-lap journey for Campos Racing. He finished the race in 17th position after a challenging debut weekend on the Albert Park streets.
