How Piastri can claim the title at Abu Dhabi

Tuesday, 2 December 2025

The Aussie will need a lot to go his way to make history.

This weekend’s race in Abu Dhabi is shaping up to be the most significant moment for Australian motorsport in 15 years.

Melbourne’s own Oscar Piastri has a shot at the 2025 Formula 1® Drivers’ Championship, but the stars will need to align for him to pull it off.

Back in 2010, his manager Mark Webber faced a similar opportunity at this very circuit. On that occasion, Webber fell short, losing out to his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel.

So what does Piastri need to make history? He currently sits third in the standings, 16 points behind his teammate and championship leader Lando Norris, and four points behind Max Verstappen in second.

It’s not the ideal position heading into a title decider, but Formula 1® has taught us that anything can happen.

To keep his championship hopes alive, Piastri needs a top-two finish. A victory would seal Verstappen’s fate and knock him out of contention, but Norris would still need to end up sixth or lower for the title to swing Piastri’s way.

If Piastri crosses the line in second, the equation gets tougher. Norris would have to fall back to tenth or worse, and Verstappen must end up fourth or lower.

Even if the title slips away, this season will still be remembered as an incredible achievement for the Aussie. It’s easy to forget this is only his third year in F1®.

Catch the season finale live at 12:00 am AEDT on Monday.
