The British star led every segment of qualifying at Albert Park, securing the top spot for Mercedes-AMG ahead of a dramatic session for the field.

George Russell will start from P1 in Sunday’s FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026 after a one-sided fight for pole position. The tall Brit was too consistent and too fast in all three qualifying sessions, lapping the 5.278km Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in 1m18.518s.

Russell dominated the afternoon, topping Q1 and Q2 before securing the first pole of the new hybrid era. His Mercedes-AMG teammate Kimi Antonelli qualified alongside him on the front row, completing a Silver Arrows lockout.

The day was far from perfect for the Mercedes-AMG crew, who worked flat-out to repair Antonelli's car after his heavy practice crash. In Q3, a cooling fan left in Antonelli's sidepod fell onto the track and was struck by Lando Norris, triggering a red flag.

In a major upset, Isack Hadjar qualified third in his debut for the senior Red Bull team. Conversely, teammate Max Verstappen suffered a shock Q1 exit after losing control at Turn 1 before setting a time.

Charles Leclerc was the best of the Ferraris in fourth, starting just ahead of local hero Oscar Piastri. Piastri held the edge over Lando Norris for much of the day, but the World Champion fought back to secure P6.

Lewis Hamilton will start seventh in his Ferrari debut, followed by the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and debutant Arvid Lindblad. Audi Revolut F1 Team impressed as Gabriel Bortoleto reached Q3, though a late-session stoppage relegated him to tenth.

Eliminations in Q2 included both Alpine and Haas drivers, alongside Alexander Albon and Nico Hülkenberg. Hülkenberg narrowly missed the top ten by just 0.08s in an encouraging showing for the team.

Q1 saw the elimination of both Cadillac entries, with Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas struggling for pace. Fernando Alonso also failed to progress, while Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll did not set times.
