At the end of 2020, you’d have got long odds on Alex Albon ever returning to F1®, his story seemingly written as he was cast aside by Red Bull after being eviscerated by Max Verstappen.
Four years on, Verstappen is still pummelling his teammates – and Albon can lay claim to being ‘the Verstappen’ of his section of the grid.
Just as the Dutchman lay waste to the best of the rest at the sharp end in 2023, Albon was doing his own one-man demolition job on the back half. He scored all but one of Williams’ 28 points, and by leading the team to seventh in the constructors’ championship (its best finish in six years), the Thai driver outscored AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo and Haas by himself.
Few drivers extracted more out of what they had, while fewer still withheld their praise for one of the most popular characters going around.
