It didn't look like Alex Albon would get to F1® once, let alone get back there a second time. Cast aside by Red Bull as a junior, the British-born Thai driver received a shock call-up to Toro Rosso for 2019 just as he was preparing to race in Formula E – and then things really got weird.

Just 12 races into his rookie year, Red Bull jettisoned an underperforming Pierre Gasly for Albon, who slotted in alongside Max Verstappen. At the end of 2020, with Albon producing similarly underwhelming results as Gasly next to the dominant Dutchman, Albon was on the outer again, left to race in DTM as Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda were preferred at AlphaTauri.
Albon's F1 time looked shot, but Williams came from nowhere to offer him a seat alongside former F2® teammate Nicholas Latifi, the latest twist in a career arc that seemingly only fluctuates between extremes.
