Leclerc victorious in action-packed British Grand Prix as Antonelli falters
Monday, 6 July 2026
The Monégasque driver secured a hard-fought victory at Silverstone after technical drama denied pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli a chance at the top step of the podium.
Charles Leclerc emerged as the victor in a hugely eventful FORMULA 1 PIRELLI BRITISH GRAND PRIX 2026. The Ferrari driver delivered a flawless performance to secure his ninth career victory, capitalizing on a late technical failure that derailed Kimi Antonelli's race.
Leclerc made a lightning start from the front row, surging into the lead alongside teammate Lewis Hamilton to demote polesitter Antonelli to third. While Antonelli fought back to P2 and briefly led during the pit stop phase, a left-front wheel shield failure on Lap 41 ruined his afternoon.

The rookie was forced into multiple unscheduled pit stops to remove the broken bodywork, dropping him down the order. A subsequent five-second penalty for track limits compounded his misery, leaving the championship leader classified in a disappointing 16th place.
Further drama unfolded on Lap 48 when Max Verstappen spun his Red Bull into the gravel trap at Stowe, triggering a late-race Safety Car. The grand prix ultimately ended under caution conditions, sealing Leclerc's first career victory at the historic Silverstone circuit.
George Russell secured second place for Mercedes-AMG after electing to stay out on track while others pitted during the Safety Car phase. This strategic gamble allowed the Briton to leapfrog Hamilton, who completed the podium in third for Scuderia Ferrari.
Hamilton retained his rostrum finish despite a post-race stewards' investigation for a yellow flag infringement, which resulted in a simple reprimand. Fellow home favorite Lando Norris crossed the line in fourth place to secure solid points for McLaren-Mercedes.
Isack Hadjar took a strong fifth for Red Bull, leading the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Gabriel Bortoleto scored valuable points for Audi in eighth, while Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top ten.
Local hero Oscar Piastri endured another difficult afternoon, finishing just outside the points-paying positions in 11th. The Australian's race unravelled on the very first lap after making contact with Lawson, forcing an early pit stop for front wing damage.
Carlos Sainz finished 12th for Williams-Mercedes, ahead of Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon. Sergio Perez claimed 15th for Cadillac, while Valtteri Bottas, Fernando Alonso, and Lance Stroll completed the classified runners.
Joining Verstappen on the retirement list were Alexander Albon and Audi's Nico Hülkenberg. Hülkenberg pulled off track with a mechanical issue on Lap 39, triggering the initial Virtual Safety Car phase.
Following his zero-score weekend, Antonelli's lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship has been reduced to 25 points. The paddock will take a short break before the season resumes at Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix.
